Dear Parents, Friends
and Caregivers
Did you know that
·
65% of New Entrant children will
hold a job in the future that doesn’t even yet exist?
·
in 2014 human knowledge doubles
every 13 months?
·
the world your children will
enter as young adults is so vastly different from that of today that teachers
need to develop a new set of skills and capacities in order for their children
to be prepared well?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcZg51Il9no
New skills we need to teach include inquiry,
collaboration, initiative, responsibility, creativity, exploration and
leadership.
We need to help our children develop faith
in Jesus, hope for their future and love for God, for
themselves, for others, for learning and for God’s world.
At Mahurangi Christian School these are big
questions for us. We haven’t got it all together yet. It’s a big ask to make
these shifts well in order to prepare your children for a future so different
from our own past and present.
But we are excited about the journey. We
have great people on our board and staff who are engaging about these issues
for the good of the school.
During the week I will be sending
out a questionnaire via surveymonkey.com in which we seek to gather your
thoughts about what we do well and where we can improve. Please make it a
priority to complete this so that the Board can be informed about your
priorities as we develop our 2015 strategic plan.
We look forward to healthy inquiry,
faith-filled exploration and great collaboration as a school, and invite
you to participate in the process through the questionnaire.
Several people asked for the slides and
notes from my talk yesterday.
Thanks so much
Helen Pearson
Postponement Life Education
Unfortunately, Chris the educator for Life
Education was unwell on Monday and so has had to postpone his visit with Rooms
3 & 4. He will arrange another time with us as soon as he is able. The
money already received will be carried over for his later visit.
Camp Forms
Camp forms are now overdue please send them
back to the school as soon as possible so we can get on with the planning.
Thanks
Bus Notice
This Wednesday (19/11) the College finishes
early for a union meeting. Our afternoon bus will still run but please note the
following:
·
The MCS bus will go straight to Warkworth
Primary then to the library.
·
There will be no bus 3 (Whangateau), 6
(Matakana Valley), or 15 (Ahuroa) at 3.25pm from the college. So any
MCS children who catch these buses will have to find their own way home.
Prayer for Our School
If you
are interested in praying for our school, please come along to a prayer meeting
being held each Thursday morning, during term time. The meeting starts at 9am and
finishes by 9.45am and is in
the crèche room, in the chapel.
iPads/Tablets: A great Christmas Idea
All children in Years 4-8 will need their own
iPad for 2015.
This can be 'borrowed' from the school for a
small charge $5 per week, or purchased through the school for $20 per week.
It is to your child's advantage to have the
ability to take their iPad home to continue with homework and research. This is
easier if your child has his/her own iPad.
You may like to consider giving your child an
iPad for Christmas. Any tablet is fine. However, an iPad will be easier for
teachers and learners as all apps will be the same.
All children in the school will be required to
have their own personal set of headphones next year. So something else that
could become part of the Christmas list if they do not already have some.

Well done Elisara Family
We
are so blessed to have the Elisara family as part of our school community.
“Whangaparoa
parents Ursula and George Elisara have recently received an Excellence in
Foster Care Award for their efforts in caring for children over the past twelve
years.” Lifewise
Moira
Lawler, General Manager of Lifewise, says “Ursula and George are an
inspirational couple and the entire Lifewise team is delighted that they have
been recognised with this award. Foster carers such as Ursula and George play
an incredible role nurturing children who have been through a lot in their
young lives, giving them stability and a loving home. Lifewise couldn’t do what
we do without amazingly warm hearted, and committed, people like Ursula and
George.”

Community Notices
“The Voices of Pain and The Voice of Hope” by Alexis Waterhouse
I am a counsellor in the Rodney District, (North of Auckland).
For the past six years I have had the privilege of working with men and women
through issues such as Anxiety, Depression, Abuse, Eating Disorders,
Personality Disorders, Self Harm, Suicidal Ideation, Addiction and Grief and Loss.
Over this time I have heard many stories and seen a lot of pain. One thing that
has become glaringly obvious is that while each individual's journey and pain
is their own - the lies that they hear as a result of this pain are much the
same.
Earlier this year I wrote a poem entitled "The Voices of
Pain and the Voice of Hope." It is designed to expose the lies that keep
people isolated and alone in their pain; then to bring hope and draw people to
community and support. A little while ago, I had the idea of making it into a
book.
