Newsletter Term 4 Week 3 2013

Term 4 Week 3
29 October 2013

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Friends of the School,

On Sunday 17 November is our annual Mahurangi Christian School Birthday Church Service.

This is our opportunity to remember the heritage of our school, and to thank God for God's presence with us and work in and through us over many years.

The Snells Beach Baptist church members birthed our school and still work today in many volunteer capacities behind the scenes to ensure that we have great facilities.

·         Some provide morning tea each week for our school assemblies.
·         Some are on the Proprietor board, and manage the finances for the mortgage and the other many obligations to the Ministry of Education. Jennifer Smith and previously Sheila Holden have spent many many days voluntarily each year managing the attendance dues.
·         Some are on our Board of Trustees and meet regularly for the benefit of our school.
·         Some have weeded gardens, some have maintained and completely repainted the toilet block for the children.
·         Ruth Meldrum has voluntarily helped for many years in our school library, and as a teacher aide of reading.
·         Trevor Lark has helped as a volunteer teacher aide in the science and physical education area, and has also volunteered to give our senior children technology skills and experiences every week this year.
·         Rob Jensen has been a faithful supporter of the school as Chairman of the Proprietors for the last couple of years, and we enjoy a good relationship.

This is all a significant commitment from many people who have no other reason to be involved but for their love for God, their love for your children, and a sense of the opportunities they have to bless this community through providing Christian education.

It is this love that inspires these people to continue being a blessing. The Proprietors are commissioned with the responsibility for the Special Christian Character of our school, and this is the core reason they do the work they do. Many in the church faithfully pray for our school, and we will never know the full extent of the fruit of these prayers.

So, on Sunday 17 November, the entire school is asked to attend our Mahurangi Christian School Anniversary service to give thanks and to pray for our school.

Please plan to come to join with families and friends who are prayerfully committed to God's work through our school.

Thanks
Helen Pearson

Congratulations Yummy Sticker Collectors
We received $237 to spend on sports equipment this week from our yummy sticker collection.  That is awesome aswe only managed $170 last year. So thank you all our fabulous collectors, including families in the school, Mahurangi Baptist Church Members and other faithful friends.

We even received some stickers from a lady in Auckland who, finding her children’s school was no longer collecting them, mailed them to us. She tells me she will continue to collect them even over the summer and send them up to us when the competition resumes next year. It would be great if you can continue collecting. It gives us a good  head start to next year’s collection. If you would like any collection sheets they are available from the office.

Senior Uniform 2014
Next year our Years 7 & 8 will have a new uniform. Shorts and skorts will remain the same as the junior uniform but both Year 7 & 8 boys and girls will have a white shirt rather than the maroon polo. These will be available before school next year.

We receive $3 for every Buddy Kit sold so please support us by collecting orders.  A Chocolate Brown Voucher will be won by the family who sell the most. Order sheets with money must be returned by 15th November. The Buddy Kits are available for viewing in the office.

Changes in Child Restraint Laws
Please note that from 1 November (the end of this week), the law says that you must:
-correctly secure your child in an approved  restraint until their 7th birthday
-correctly secure your child in an approved child restraint if one is available in the vehicle (and if not, in any child restraint or safety belt that is available) from their 7th birthday until their 8th birthday
To find out more about the law and what a suitable child restraint is under the new law, please click on the link below:

Please note that for school trips we need appropriate car seats to be provided by parents for the day. Please also note that the police will be enforcing this law.

Production
We will be producing a school musical performance at the end of the year on 29th November.
If you would like to help with musical, dance or dramatic aspects of the performance preparation, prop development or costumes, or lighting and sound, please click here https://docs.google.com/a/mahu.school.nz/forms/d/1BepJG6Ejhfoai4XLgwl08mlwWDbEc8iA4VC0Md6C7go/viewform

Video being made about MCS for professional development of NZ Teachers
On 18 November, we will be visited by a professional video team so that a short movie can be made about our school and the progress we have made in e-learning during the last 18 months. The facilitator is excited by what is happening here and thinks that other schools throughout the country need to know about it to help them in their own journeys!
If you don’t want your child to be filmed please advise the office.

Honouring Assemblies
See your child get a special honour
Our End of Term Celebration Assemblies this year have focused on those learners who have made the most outstanding Progress during that term.
Our End of Year Prizegivings focus on those learners who have had the most outstanding Achievement.

This term we are holding special Honouring Assemblies in which we will honour people within our school community.
Please note that all individuals in our school will be specially honoured in an assembly that focuses on their particular Room. Please do try to come along to the Room 1, 2, or 3 assembly on the dates below to see your child presented with a special certificate that honours the things that we appreciate about them. This will enable us to celebrate those things that impress us about each person, and will ensure that all our learners will know how much we value them regardless of progress or achievement.
Please book in the dates now, and invite friends and grandparents and prepare to bring a plate to share for a class party/morning tea for all learners and guests celebrating with us. If there are extra curricula skills developed, or you have noticed significant improvement in your child at home in some way, feel free to let us know.
Honouring Assemblies: Honour our helpers and volunteers
