Week 8, Term 1

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Friends,

It is a wonderful blessing to have a school community with volunteers who are willing to make our school, and therefore our children’s education and environment better.

It is also wonderful to have people in the wider community helping us out.

New Sandpit
We are blessed to have had Garry Morning building the sandpit for some weeks in his spare time, Mason Contractors providing base course and sand for free, and Steve Lavers from Lavers Upholstery providing the sandpit cover for free.

New Junior Playground Surround
As I speak we have two volunteers working on concreting the uprights in for the new playground surround. Gary Rowley is here while his wife, Robyn is in hospital. Thanks Gary. Peter Thompson has also been helping us weekly until the playground surround is completed. The Corrections Department has also sent teams of people to help dig out the old dirt.

Library setup
Nicolette Morning and Ursula Elisara are completing a big job of ‘auditing’ the school library. Thanks so much to them for giving us so much of their week last week on this.

New Musical Instruments
Besides this, we have a gentleman in Christchurch soon to be working to make an application on our behalf to provide us with thousands of dollars worth of new musical instruments for our Music Intensive mid-year.

Volunteer Teacher Aides
We have had great support from various parents this term as teacher aides - in particular, Louisa Kimber, Deborah Jane, and also Michelle Ryder and Sarah Summers.

New Literacy and Numeracy Teacher
Annette Pahl is working hard alongside staff with small groups of learners in literacy and numeracy. While she does get paid for this by the Ministry, she is working overtime with great diligence in order to give the best possible understanding of individual learners who struggle in these areas.

New Volunteer Teacher
We will be pleased to welcome Jack Duvey to school to volunteer as a teacher on Fridays, helping out our staff. It will be great to have a male teacher who is sports-keen to support our teachers as he gains experience towards his final registration.

I am quite sure I have missed some people but time has run out and I need to head off for a meeting.

Thanks to everyone who makes our community rich.

(And we do have a need for someone to spend about 1-1.5 days on data entry to complete the stock take! Please ring asap if you are able to help with all or part of this!)

Have a great week

Helen

Support Group for Very Able Children
Last week invitations were sent home with a number of children who are very able and very able children hindered by a learning disability.  Lynn Williams our  Gifted and Talented teacher will be running the meeting on Wednesday 25th March, 7pm-8pm at Mahurangi Christian School.  Could you please RSVP to the office by lunchtime on Wednesday if you are able to attend.

Library data entry
In order to get the library up and running for the year, we are in need of some parental help with data entry.  If you are able to help this week, could you please contact the office.

Headlice
Unfortunately, we have had a report of headlice in the school.  It is important that you check your child’s hair, and treat for head lice if required, to help prevent head lice spreading.  Check the hair of every member of the household. If you find live head lice on anyone, treat them as well. Do not treat everyone “just in case”.   It is a good idea to wash hair ties and hair brushes.

Please make Tuesday headlice check and treat day.  If we all do this we would be able to eradicate the problem from our school.

Swimming and Sport
The children have been enjoying their Thursday afternoons at Snells Beach.  This week will be the last one for the term and the children will be doing sport and swimming.

Your child will need sun hat, sunscreen, lunch, drink bottle. togs, towel, and a bag for wet clothes.

Thursday 26 March - Swimming and Sports.

Assembly
Assembly this Friday will be at 9.10am.  The senior children will be leading the assembly .  Morning tea will provided afterwards.

There will also be a celebration assembly on Thursday 2nd April at 9.10am.

Registration forms for Hockey have already gone home and are now due back.  The hockey fee for the season is $80 and is it due by the 1st April.   If you have any queries please contact  Nicolette on 021 307 387.  Nicolette would also love to hear from you if you would like to coach or manage a team.

Prayer for our school
If you are interested in praying for our school, you are welcome to come along to a prayer meeting being held each Tuesday morning, during term time.  The meeting is from 8.50am - 9.20am in the crèche room, in the chapel.   Any queries please contact Louisa Kimber through the school office.
